SENIORS STEER @UAMHOOPS TO LOP-SIDED NON-CONFERENCE WIN

MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team shot 51 percent from the field, scored 31 points off turnovers and posted a plus-30 rebound margin to highlight a 90-44 non-conference victory over Dallas Christian College on Monday night inside Steelman Field House.

The Weevils had five seniors reach double-digits in points and two in rebounds. Senior Jamal Peterson led the way with a career-high of 27 points while tying his career-high of five made three-pointers. Peterson also added four assists in the win.

Senior Jerron Washington, senior Richard Benedyth, senior Tyler Davis and senior Andre Brown all reached double-figures in points. Brown led the way in the rebounding battle with 14, his third double-digit performance of the season in that respective category. Senior Evan Sims also reached double-digits in rebounding with 10.

The Weevils (2-6) jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the game before allowing the Crusaders (1-13) to reach the scoreboard at the 13:12 mark. UAM continued to grow its lead from that point, getting up by 17 at the 8:27 mark on a layup from Washington. The first 20-point lead of the game came on a made jumper from Peterson at the 5:24 mark of the opening half.

UAM closed the final five minutes of the half on a 12-2 run to hold a 29-point lead of 43-14 at the break.

The Weevils extended that run into the second half by scoring the first five points to hold a 34-point lead on a three-pointer from Peterson at the 18:45 mark.

The Crusaders cut their deficit down to 26 points on two different occasions over the ensuing 10 minutes, but a 17-0 scoring run by the Weevils over the span of four minutes gave UAM a 43-point lead with 5:41 remaining in regulation. The Weevils grew their lead to as much as 48 points in the final five minutes.

UAM finished the game at 51 percent from the field (32-for-63), 42 percent on three-pointers (11-for-26) and 68 percent on foul shots (15-for-22). Dallas Christian made 34 percent of its shots (19-for-56), led individually by Keenan Brown with nine points.

The Weevils close out the 2015 portion of the schedule this Saturday at home against Crowley's Ridge College. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Steelman Field House.
