Box Score (HTML)

MONTICELLO –
The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team suffered a 14-8 loss to No. 30 Delta State on Wednesday in the first home game of the 2015 season.

UAM (3-2) gave up 14 runs off 16 hits, nine of those runs unearned due to four Weevil fielding errors. The Statesmen (1-3) used seven pitchers in the game and combined to total 14 UAM strikeouts.

The Weevils took advantage of a pair of walks and a hit batsmen to plate one run in the bottom of the first inning. UAM held onto that 1-0 lead through the first four innings, before the Statesmen reached the board in the top of the fifth with three runs off three hits, including a two-run homerun by Ben Pickard.

UAM tied it up in the bottom half of the fifth on a two-run single from sophomore C.J. Womack that went off the diving glove of the DSU second baseman and into short right field.

Delta's offensive burst continued into the sixth, adding four more runs off four hits and another UAM error.

UAM brought it back to a two-run game in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff homerun from junior Corey Wood and two-out RBI groundout by C.J. Womack later in the inning.

The Statesmen took a commanding lead in the top half of the eighth inning, crossing the plate seven times on five hits and two UAM errors.

The Weevils finalized the scoring in the bottom of the ninth with three runs off one hit and one DSU error.

Corey Wood was the only Weevil to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with two walks. Womack finished the game with a career-high four RBI.

The Weevils are back in action this weekend at home against Southern Nazarene for the first Great American Conference series of the season. The three-game set is slated to start on Friday with a single game at 2 p.m. at Weevils Field.
