WEATHERFORD, Oklahoma – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team defeated Southwestern Oklahoma State twice on Saturday to record a four-game Great American Conference sweep over the Bulldogs. Final scores on Saturday were 5-4 and 6-3.
The Blossoms (10-3, 4-0 GAC) came from behind in the first game, down 2-1 after the first inning, to score one run in the sixth on an RBI groundout from junior Kali Piha to score freshman Breanna Sanders, who led off the inning with a walk. That forced a 2-all tie, which held through the regulation seven innings.
In the top of the eighth, the Blossoms broke the tie with three runs, including a two-run double by Piha and an RBI groundout from sophomore McKenzie Rice.
SWOSU rallied in the bottom of the inning with two runs, but the UAM win was sealed when SWOSU's Katelyn White flew out to deep center with two runners on to end the game.
Sophomore McKenzie Ashby (2-0) went the distance for the Blossoms in the extra-inning affair, giving up four runs (one earned) off 10 hits with no strikeouts and no walks.
In the second game, both teams plated a pair of runs in the first inning, including a bases loaded walk by junior Katherine Batey and an RBI single from Breanna Sanders.
UAM held NWOSU with out another run until the seventh, while the Blossoms plated three in the third and one in the fourth. Sanders picked up her second RBI of the game with a run-scoring single in the third, followed later in the inning by a two-RBI pinch-hit single from senior Briana Daugherty.
UAM scored its final run of the series in the fourth on a sac fly from junior Kelli Halder to score senior Sydney Tipton, who led off the inning with a base hit to right center field.
Senior Katie Slaugher (4-1) earned the win in complete-game fashion, giving up three runs (two earned) with eight strikeouts and just one walk in her seven innings in the circle.
The Blossoms are set to return to action next weekend at home against Henderson State.
