GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team scored three runs in each of the seventh and ninth innings to lead to a 7-3 victory over Pittsburg State on Friday in the QuikTrip Division II Classic.
The Weevils (2-0) started the scoring with a single run in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by senior Bronson Gillam to score junior Evan Comeau, who led off the inning with a walk.
Pitt State (1-1) answered with single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-1 lead. UAM regained the lead in the top of the seventh on a two-run double by junior Corey Wood and an RBI single by junior Mitchell Dornblut.
The Gorillas made it a one-run game again in the bottom of the eighth after Andrew Kreiling tripled to left center to lead off the inning and later scored on a ground ball to short.
The Weevils cushioned their lead in the top of the ninth with three runs, sparked by extra base hits from junior Nick Cerda and true freshman Chase Tucker. Cerda hit a double down the left field line and later scored on a Pitt State error. Tucker tripled to center field and made it all the way around, scoring on a bobbled throw from the outfield.
Junior Gavin Johnston (1-0) picked up the win for UAM after giving up two runs off five hits in the first six innings. True freshman Dawson Moser made his UAM debut in relief, allowing one run off one hit in the seventh and eighth innings. Senior Jeff Harvill closed the door on the Gorillas in a non-save situation with another two-strikeout performance in the ninth.
Jake Stevenson (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Pitt State, giving up four runs off three hits with five strikeouts and one walk in the first 6.1 innings.
UAM's Corey Wood posted his second straight multi-hit performance to start the year, going 2-for-4 with two RBI in win over Pitt State.
The Weevils are back in action in the QuikTrip Classic on Saturday against Great American Conference rival Southern Arkansas. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
