RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team extended its winning streak to nine, but it ended there as the Blossoms split a Great American Conference double-header with No. 23 Arkansas Tech on Sunday.
The Blossoms (15-4, 7-1 GAC) won the first game 2-1 and lost the second game 8-4.
In the first game, senior Katie Slaughter (7-1) threw a two-hitter for her seventh complete-game win of the year. She allowed just one run, which was a solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh. She finished with six strikeouts and just walks given up.
UAM broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Allison Stipes and added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single by senior Sydney Tipton.
In the second game, the Blossoms took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI single from freshman Ashton Currey, but the Golden Suns (14-6, 5-3 GAC) offense awoke with one run in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth to take a big lead.
The Blossoms made a final surge in the top of the seventh with three runs, featuring an RBI groundout from junior Holly Wilmarth and a three-run homerun from junior Kali Piha.
UAM's nine-game winning streak was its longest since winning 16 straight during the 2012 GAC championship season.
The Blossoms return to Monticello for a four-game GAC series at home against Harding next weekend. Weather permitting, it will be UAM's first home games of the 2015 season.
