MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team scored six runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to record a 9-4 come-from-behind victory over Arkansas Tech at home on Friday in the first of a three-game Great American Conference series.
Before the seventh-inning rally, the Weevils (11-9, 8-6 GAC) had been held scoreless on only three hits in the first six innings.
UAM hit through the lineup in the seventh and ended up with six runs off seven hits, including a two-run homerun by junior C.J. Womack and RBI singles from redshirt freshman Brian Ray, junior Corey Wood and junior Travis Steinke. UAM got its final run in the inning on a sacrifice fly from junior Nick Cerda, who led off the inning.
Corey Wood gave the Weevils a few extra insurance runs in the eighth with a three-run homerun to deep right-center, his fourth of the season.
The Wonder Boys (17-13, 5-7 GAC) opened the scoring in the top of the first with a two-run homerun from Cole Fergus, and added single runs in the third and fifth innings to take a 4-0 lead.
Junior Zach McKnight (4-1) earned the win for the Weevils, giving up four runs off 10 hits with five strikeouts and no walks in the first eight innings. Senior Jeff Harvill threw a perfect ninth in a non-save situation.
Wood ended with four RBI for the second straight game. In addition to hit two hits, junior Kevin Fitzpatrick and Womack also turned in multi-hit performances in the win.
The two teams are back in action on Saturday at Weevils Field in a double-header starting at noon.
