BETHANY, Oklahoma – University of Arkansas at Monticello senior pitcher Katie Slaughter led the Blossoms to a pair of Great American Conference road victories over Southern Nazarene on Saturday by scores of 8-0 and 6-0.
Slaughter (12-7) earned the win in both games, keeping the Crimson Storm (16-23, 12-15 GAC) off the scoreboard in the first game on just three hits with four strikeouts and no walks. The Austin, Texas native was called in to the second game out of the bullpen and proceeded to retire the final 14 batters of the game consecutively, including two strikeouts.
In the first game, Slaughter's run support came in the form of four runs in the third inning, three in the fourth and one more in the fifth for the team's third run-rule victory of the season.
UAM's runs in the third featured an RBI triple by senior Lacy Blanchard, an RBI double by junior Kali Piha and an RBI single from sophomore McKenzie Rice. The Blossoms took advantage of a pair of SNU fielding errors and a two-run single by senior Sydney Tipton in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead.
Freshman Ashton Currey put UAM (20-17, 12-14 GAC) on top by eight in the top of the fifth with an RBI single through the middle of the infield.
In the second game, UAM took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning off an SNU error and an RBI double from Tipton. The Blossoms added another pair of runs in the fifth on back-to-back run-producing hits from Blanchard and sophomore Korie Parker.
Junior Holly Wilmarth blasted her 10th homerun of the season in the top of the seventh inning, a two-run shot over the left field fence to put UAM on top by its final margin.
The Blossoms are back in action on Tuesday, April 14 at home against Henderson State. First pitch of the double-header is set for 2 p.m. at Blossoms Field.
