@WEEVILSBASEBALL SPLITS WITH SE, WINS SERIES

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team split a Great American Conference double-header with Southeastern Oklahoma State on Monday at home, winning the first game 10-2 before falling 9-5 in extra innings in the nightcap.

UAM wins the series two games to one following Sunday's 10-3 victory, the Weevils' fourth GAC series win of the season.

After three scoreless innings to start Monday's first game, Southeastern (15-22, 11-11 GAC) opened the scoring with one run in the top of the fourth inning. UAM (16-17, 12-13 GAC) answered with five runs off four hits and two Southeastern errors in the bottom of the inning to take a four-run lead.

SE's Brandon Grimsley hit a solo homerun in the top of the fifth inning to cut UAM's lead down to 5-2 in the fifth inning.

The Weevils patiently plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off no hits and a total of six walks, including bases-loaded walks by sophomore Lathan McFadden, sophomore Alex Smith and junior Evan Comeau.

UAM finalized the scoring in the bottom of the eighth with two runs, coming on an RBI double by junior Nick Cerda and an RBI single by McFadden.

Junior Gavin Johnston (3-3) earned the win, giving up just two runs in the first five innings. Junior Ben Aldridge shut down the Savage Storm in the final four innings, allowing just two base runners to earn a long save, his second of the year.

In the nightcap, Southeastern took an early lead with one run in the first and three runs in the second, highlighted by a three-run home run in the second by Brandon Grimsley.

The Weevils began chipping away at Southeastern's lead in the fourth on an RBI double by senior Bronson Gillam. In the fifth, UAM cut the deficit to one run by scoring a pair of Savage Storm wild pitches.

Both teams scored in the sixth, but it was Gillam who came through in the clutch with a two-run homerun over the wall in right field to force a 5-all tie. Neither team scored in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Southeastern salvaged one win in the series by scoring four runs in the top of the eighth, including a two-run homerun by Grimsley, his second round-tripper of the game.

The Weevils have a quick turnaround for their next game, traveling to Jackson, Tennessee tomorrow for a single non-conference game against Union. The originally scheduled double-header has been changed to just one game starting at 4 p.m.
