SEARCY, Arkansas — The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team finished a four-game road swing on Thursday with a 78-64 Great American Conference loss to Harding.
The Weevils (4-9, 2-5 GAC) held the lead throughout the first eight minutes of the first half, even by as much as seven points on two different occasions, the first following three-pointers from seniors Tyler Davis and Jamal Peterson as a 6-0 run to put UAM up 14-7 at the 14:54 mark.
Harding (6-5, 5-1 GAC) later regained the lead at the 10:51 mark and used a 22-3 run over the span of eight minutes to hold a 13-point advantage with just under five minutes remaining before halftime. The Bisons held a nine-point lead of 41-32 at the break.
UAM began the second half on an 8-0 run to trim the deficit down to one point at the 16-minute mark. The Weevils later forced the third tie score of the game with 11:10 remaining on a three-pointer by junior Vicktor Arnick to make it 50-all.
Following a back-and-forth battle over the next two minutes, the Bisons pulled away with a 12 straight points to get back up by double-digits with five minutes remaining.
The Weevils finished the night at 36 percent from the field (23-for-64), 33 percent on three-pointers (7-for-21) and 58 percent on foul shots (11-for-19). Arnick and senior Richard Benedyth led the Weevils with 12 points each. Senior Andre Brown added 11 point and nine rebounds. Davis finished with 11 points.
The Bisons shot 48 percent from the field (29-for-61), 29 percent on three-pointers (7-for-24), and 87 percent on foul shots (13-for-15). HU's Jacob Gibson led all scorers with 18 points.
UAM is back in action on Saturday at home against Henderson State. Tipoff is 4 p.m. at Steelman Field House.
