ST. LOUIS, Missouri — Maryville rallied from down seven points with 11 minutes remaining to beat the University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team by a final score of 89-78 on Saturday at Moloney Arena.
The Weevils (3-7) led by seven points on four different occasions midway through the second half, but Maryville posted a 31-15 scoring run in the final nine minutes to negate a potential road victory for UAM.
Maryville's game-sealer came on a 9-0 run from the 7:37 mark to the 5:36 mark that gave the Saints the final lead change of the contest. There were a total of 14 lead changes in the game and six tie scores.
The Saints led for the majority of the first half, but never by more than six points. UAM held the lead on four different occasions, including a three-pointer from senior Tyler Davis to cap a 7-0 run and put the Weevils up 24-22 with 5:39 remaining before halftime. The two squads exchanged baskets for the final five minutes with Maryville holding a slight edge of 36-33 at the break.
The Weevils started the second half outscoring the Saints 24-14 in the first nine minutes to hold a 57-50 lead following another 7-0 run, this time capped by a layup from senior Evan Sims.
Senior Jamal Peterson led the Weevils and tied for the game-high in scoring with 18 points, 12 coming on three-pointers. Senior Richard Benedyth added 15 points and five assists. Junior Vicktor Arnick posted 14 points and five rebounds.
Senior Evan Sims posted his first UAM double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Davis also reached double-digits in scoring with 10 points.
As a team, the Weevils finished at 53 percent from the field (30-for-57), 45 percent on three-pointers (10-for-22) and 62 percent on foul shots (8-for-13). Maryville ended the game at 52 percent from the field (31-for-60), 26 percent on treys (5-for-19) and 85 percent on foul shots (22-for-26).
The Weevils return to the Great American Conference portion of the schedule next week, traveling to Southern Nazarene on Thursday and to Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday.
