RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas — The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team lost to No. 20 Arkansas Tech on the road Saturday afternoon by a final score of 90-60.
In the first period, Tech (13-2, 12-0 GAC) jumped out to an eight-point lead in the first five minutes. UAM sophomore Cheridan Burroughs responded with back-to-back layups to cut that deficit in half with 3:57 remaining in the opening period.
The Golden Suns took over from there, using a 13-3 run that extended into the second period to hold a 14-point advantage with just under seven minutes remaining before halftime.
Tech ended the first half shooting 76 percent from the field (22-for-29) to hold a 55-25 lead at the break. The Suns maintained at least a 20-point lead throughout the final two periods, and ended the game shooting 57 percent (33-for-58).
UAM (8-6, 5-5 GAC) finished at 42 percent from the field (23-for-55), 12 percent from on three-pointers (1-for-8) and 77 percent on foul shots (13-for-17).
UAM's leading scorer coming into the game, Jordan Goforth, who was the No. 2 scorer in the nation as well, was limited to four points in the first half after picking up four fouls midway through the second period. She scored 10 in the second half to finish just behind senior Nikki Mullen for the team lead. Mullen scored 15 points on a 6-for-10 shooting performance.
Freshman Mia Hayes scored a career-high 11 points in the loss.
Tech's Fatima Adams led all scorers with 20 points.
UAM is back in action on Monday at home against Ouachita, a game that was originally scheduled for this past Thursday but moved because of inclement weather. Monday's tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at Steelman Field House.
