MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team recorded its most dominating Great American Conference win of the season on Thursday night at home in an 82-64 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State.
The Weevils (7-11, 5-7 GAC) started quickly, going on a 9-0 run after giving up the opening basket of the game to take the early lead. The visiting Savage Storm missed four of their first five shots before closing the gap to four with 16 minutes remaining in the half.
Southeastern rallied with a 14-2 run to take its first lead of the game with 10 minutes remaining in the opening half. UAM responded with an 11-3 run later in the half, including hitting five consecutive shots to take a 33-27 lead with three minutes remaining before intermission.
Using 52 percent shooting in the first half, UAM held a 38-31 lead at the break.
Southeastern took advantage of UAM turnovers early in the second half to close its deficit down to five at the 16:45 mark. The Weevils responded with a 17-6 run over the next four minutes to hold a 59-43 lead. UAM got up by 20 with eight minutes remaining and never led by less than 15 minutes throughout the remainder of regulation.
The Weevils shot 55 percent from the floor (34 for 62) for the game, including 58 percent in the second half. UAM had a balanced scoring attack, with five players in double-figures. Andre Brown led the way for the home team, notching his fifth straight double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Evan Sims added 14 points on a perfect 7-for-7 shooting performance, while Vicktor Arnick, Richard Benedyth and Jamal Peterson each scored 13 for the Weevils.
UAM had 20 assists in the win, the second time to reach at least 20 in a game this year. Benedyth and Peterson tied for the game-high with five each. The Weevils held a 34-29 edge in rebounds and a 40-22 advantage in the points in the paint category.
SEOSU's Sami Bzai made six three-pointers and finished with a game-high 24 points.
UAM closes out its home stand Saturday against East Central. Tipoff for the matchup is at 3 p.m. at Steelman Field House.
