BETHANY, Oklahoma — The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team used an explosive start to record its sixth consecutive victory of the 2015-16 season, defeating Southern Nazarene Thursday night on the road by a final score of 83-74.
UAM (7-2, 4-1 Great American Conference) jumped out to a 22-6 lead in the first five minutes of Thursday night's contest. During that run, the Blossoms were 8-for-10 from the field, 4-for-4 on three-pointers and 2-for-2 on foul shots. Sophomore Taylor Collins led the charge with 10 points during that surge.
The Blossoms maintained a double-digit for nearly the rest of the first half. SNU (2-6,1-4 GAC) posted a 7-3 scoring run in the final minute of the second period to give UAM a 29-20 advantage at the halftime break.
UAM started the second half much like it did in the first with a 12-1 run early on to hold a 15-point lead of 41-26 on a three-pointer from senior Nikki Mullen at the 4:15 mark of the third period.
SNU responded with a 16-5 run over the next seven minutes to trim the UAM lead down to four points.
Senior Jordan Goforth took over at that point and scored 10 straight points for UAM to put the Blossoms back up by double-digits with just under two minutes remaining in the third period. Goforth finished with her fourth game of the season with at least 30 points and seventh straight game with at least 20. The nation's No. 1 scorer registered 33 points in Thursday's win, 24 coming in the second half.
With SNU forced to foul late, the Blossoms made 10-of-11 foul shots in the final minute to seal the win and even the team's road record this season at 2-2.
UAM ended the game at 46 percent from the field (26-for-57), 54 percent on three-pointers (13-for-24) and 86 percent on foul shots (18-for-21). In addition to Goforth's game-high 33 points, Mullen finished with 17 points and a season-high four made three-pointers. Collins and freshman Ayesha Wahid also reached double-digits in scoring with 16 and 11 points, respectively.
The Blossoms look for their seventh straight win on Saturday at Oklahoma Baptist. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. in Shawnee.
