MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team took down Great American Conference opponent Southeastern Oklahoma State Thursday night in the Weevils 2016-17 GAC opener at home by a final score of 72-61.
UAM (2-0, 1-0 GAC) found itself locked in a battle early on in the opening half with SOSU (1-2, 0-1 GAC) as each team traded multiple lead changes. A three-pointer by Hunter Daley with 7:04 remaining in the opening half saw Arkansas-Monticello take a lead of 25-23 and went on to finish the remainder of the contest never trailing the Savage Storm again. UAM began the second half of play on a 15-5 run to pull out in front of Southeastern Oklahoma and claim victory at 72-61 by the final buzzer.
Offensively the Weevils were led by junior Karim Mawunyega who finished the game with 21 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. Mawunyega added seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals to his stat-line as well.
Derylton Hill and Cobe Goosby each provided double-digit scoring games with Hill totaling 12 points and Goosby adding 11 overall. Each also tallied seven rebounds on the night and Hill led UAM in steals with three and Goosby led the home squad in assists with six. Junior Troy Thomas led Arkansas-Monticello on the glass with nine total rebounds as well.
UAM finished the contest shooting 45 percent from the field (26-for-58), 48 percent from beyond the arc (10-for-21) and 63 percent on free throws (10-for-16). SOSU ended the match-up at 38 percent from the field (20-for-53), 31 percent on threes (5-for-16) and 73 percent on foul shots (16-for-22).
The Weevils will return to action next on Saturday, November 19 as Arkansas-Monticello will host GAC opponent East Central University with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
