Weatherford, OK — The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team defeated Great American Conference opponent Southwestern Oklahoma State on the road for the Weevils fifth straight victory by a final score of 79-78.
Arkansas-Monticello (5-0, 3-0 GAC) trailed the Bulldogs of Southwestern (0-6, 0-3 GAC) during the opening half of this match-up 50-30, but the Weevils stormed a massive comeback in the second half of play. UAM outscored SWOSU 49-28 in the second half of play, creating multiple runs throughout to close the gap in this conference match-up, ultimately ending with a Karim Mawuenyega three-pointer from well beyond the arc with 00:03 remaining as the Weevils sealed the victory at 79-78.
Offensively the Weevils were led by junior Derylton Hill who posted a double-double on the night with a game-high 25 points along with 10 total rebounds. Hill ended the game shooting 8-for-12 from the field and went 9-for-10 from the charity stripe, and added one assist, one block, and one steal as well.
Junior Cobe Goosby added a season-high 21 points of his own and junior Troy Thomas contributed 12 points and eight rebounds in the match-up also.
The Weevils ended the game shooting 45 percent from the field (27-for-60), 13 percent from beyond the arc (2-for-16) and 77 percent on free throws (23-for-30). Southwestern ended the match-up at 41 percent from the field (27-for-66), 39 percent on threes (15-for-39) and 64 percent on foul shots (9-for-14).
UAM will return to the court next on Saturday, December 3 as the Weevils head to Alva, Oklahoma to take on GAC opponent Northwestern Oklahoma State, with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
