@WEEVILSBASEBALL FALLS TO NO. 9 MAVERICKS IN PITCHING DUALS

MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello opened a three-game non-conference series against ninth-ranked Minnesota State on Friday with a pair of losses, falling 3-2 in the opener and 3-1 in the seven inning game.

The No. 9 Mavericks (2-0) opened the scoring in the first game with one run off three hits in the top of the fourth inning. UAM (3-3) previously escaped a bases-loaded situation in the top of the second.

After the Mavericks pulled starter Dalton Roach in the sixth, the Weevils got on the board with a leadoff homerun by senior Corey Wood to right center to tie the game at one.

MSU strung together two runs off four hits in the top of the ninth, which proved to be enough insurance, as the Weevils answered with only one run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by senior Mitchell Dornblut.

Both teams left nine runners on base in the opener. The Mavericks outhit the Weevils 9-4. Dornblut was the only Weevil with multiple hits, going 2-for-3.

Senior starter Zach McKnight gave up only one run off five hits and struck out seven in the first six innings. Senior Chad Bradford (0-1) took the loss after giving up two runs in the ninth. MSU reliever Josh Matheson (1-0) earned the win. Maverick closer Dakota Belter recorded the save after only giving up one run in the ninth.

In the second game, the Mavericks got on top early with a triple from Taylor Branstad in the top of the first inning. Branstad later scored on a wild pitch.

Both teams plated one run in the third. UAM's run came on sac fly from senior Travis Steinke. MSU's was an on a double from Josh Wenzel, who was also responsible for the final run of the game with an RBI grounder in the top of the fifth.

MSU's Brody Rodning (1-0) earned a complete-game victory, giving up one run off five hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks. UAM junior starter Grant Black (0-1) took the loss, giving up three runs off four hits with six strikeouts and four walks in the first 6.1 innings.

The series wraps up on Saturday with a single nine-inning game starting at noon at Weevils Field.
