@UAMSOFTBALL SPLITS DAY 2 OF 8-STATE CLASSIC, SUNDAY'S GAMES CANCELED

BENTONVILLE, Arkansas — The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team wrapped up its participation in the 8-State Classic on Saturday with a 13-5 win over Wayne State and a 6-1 loss to Central Missouri.

All of Sunday's games have been canceled with the forecast calling for inclement weather in Northwest Arkansas.

In Saturday's win over Wayne State (0-4), the Blossoms (4-4) blasted 13 runs on 13 hits, highlighted by a five-run rally in the second inning.

Senior Holly Wilmarth started the scoring with a two-run homerun to left center in the bottom of the first inning in what ended up being a 3-for-4, four RBI performance.

In the second, senior Kali Piha and junior Katie Koen each had two-run doubles, with UAM's other run coming on an RBI single by junior Korie Parker.

The Blossoms added three more runs in the third inning off of two hits, one walk, one hit batter and one WSC fielding error.

Wilmarth capped her productive game with a two-run double in the fourth inning to put UAM up 12-0. The Wildcats responded with five runs in the fifth to force a sixth inning. UAM junior McKenzie Rice ended the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo homerun, her fifth hit of the contest.

Junior Kendra Coleman (2-2) earned a complete-game victory, giving up five runs off six hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.

In the second game, Central Missouri, a NCAA Division II College World Series qualifying team last year, used a pair of three-run innings to beat the Blossoms. UCM (5-5) ended up with a 13-6 margin in the hit column.

The Blossoms' lone run came in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single from Wilmarth to score sophomore catcher Ashton Currey, who led off the inning with a double.

With Sunday's games being canceled, the Blossoms are now set to play their first home games of the year in a four-game Great American Conference series against Southern Nazarene next weekend. The series opens with a double-header on Friday, February 19. First pitch is 1 p.m. at Blossoms Field.
