@WEEVILSBASEBALL SCORES SECOND WIN OVER STATESMEN

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team has defeated Delta State twice in a season for the first time ever following a 4-1 non-conference victory over the Statesmen on Wednesday at Ferris Field.

The Weevils (9-6) beat the Statesmen (9-6) on February 9 in Monticello by a final score of 13-10.

In Wednesday's win, senior Corey Wood delivered the game-winning hit with a three-run homerun in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-all tie. It was Wood's team-high fourth homerun of the season.

UAM started the scoring in the top of the third inning on an RBI single from sophomore Brian Ray to score junior Alex Smith, who led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Nick Piraino.

The Statesmen tied it up in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Colton Welch.

UAM turned four double plays in the game to end Statesmen scoring threats. The Weevils turned two in each of the first three innings.

Senior Kregg Snook (3-0) earned the win in relief after striking out two and allowing no hits or runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior Ben Aldridge and senior Chad Bradford each held the Weevil lead and gave up one hit each in the seventh and eight innings. Sophomore Dawson Moser earned his fourth save of the year after keeping DSU off the board and striking out two of the four batters he faced in the ninth.

Piraino and Ray accounted for four of UAM's seven total hits. Piraino went 2-for-3 with a walk. Ray went 2-for-5 with one RBI.

The Statesmen had 12 hits in the contest, led by Erick Santiago's 4-for-4 performance at the plate. Jake Brumfield (1-2) gave up Wood's three-run go-ahead homerun and took the loss.

The Weevils are back in action this weekend in a three-game Great American Conference series at Northwestern Oklahoma State. More details about that series will be released on Thursday.
