ARKADELPHIA, Arkansas — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team moved into sole possession of first place in the Great American Conference with a 9-3 victory over Ouachita Baptist on Friday in the first game of a three-game road series.
Reigning GAC player of the week Corey Wood continued his hot streak by putting the Weevils (17-7, 10-3 GAC) up early with a two-run double in the top of the first inning.
The Tigers (7-19, 4-12 GAC) later tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning off two hits, a walk and a UAM error.
UAM broke the tie in the top of the seventh inning with five runs coming off run producing hits from senior Mitchell Dornblut, senior Travis Steinke, senior Nick Cerda and redshirt freshman Kaleb Reeves.
The Tigers added their final runs in the bottom of the seventh after capitalizing off a pair of walks and a passed ball.
Junior Nick Piraino provided the final cushion with a two-run double in the top of the ninth.
Senior Zach McKnight (4-0) earned the win after allowing three runs (one earned) off six hits with four strikeouts and four walks in the first 6.1 innings. Senior Kregg Snook got the final two outs of the seventh without allowing a base runner before senior Ben Aldridge earned his second save of the season, keeping the Tigers to just one hit in the eighth and ninth innings.
UAM finished with 10 hits in the victory, led by two hits each from Wood, Cerda and Piraino.
UAM goes for its fifth straight series victory on Saturday with a double-header against the Tigers beginning at noon in Arkadelphia. The Weevils have won six straight games and nine of their last 10.
