@UAMSOFTBALL SWEEPS OUACHITA FOR EARLY'S 700TH WIN

MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team beat Ouachita Baptist twice on Saturday by final scores of 1-0 and 8-5 to remain unbeaten at home, sweep the four-game series and give 20th-year head coach Alvy Early his 700th career victory.

With UAM's wins on Saturday, Early improved his career softball record to 700-384-2. Combine that with his 425-211 record as UAM's women's basketball coach from 1979-2000, Early now has a combined UAM coaching record of 1,125-595-2 for a career winning percentage of .654 in nearly 40 years.

The Blossoms (21-13, 16-8 GAC) began the day with a two-hit shutout by junior Kendra Coleman, her second complete-game shutout of the series. Coleman also earned her first save of the season in the second game. Throughout the weekend, Coleman went 2-0 without allowing a run and holding the Ouachita hitters to a .071 batting average. She struck out a combined 12 batters and only gave up three bases on balls.

The only run of the first game came on a leadoff homerun from junior third baseman McKenzie Rice in the bottom of the first inning. UAM had five hits in the win, and only reached second base twice.

In the second game, freshman right fielder Kali Bolter broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with a solo homerun to right center. Ouachita took its first and only lead of the series in the top of the fifth with two runs and added three more in the sixth to hold a 5-1 advantage.

The Blossoms rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth, sending 12 batters to the plate. UAM had six hits and two walks in the inning, highlighted by a pinch-hit, two-run double from junior Allison Stipes and a two-run single from senior left fielder Kali Piha, her second hit of the inning. Senior centerfielder Holly Wilmarth and junior shortstop Korie Parker also had run-producing hits in the rally.

Freshman Paisley Pratt (2-0) earned the win in relief, allowing no runs off only one hit in getting the final two outs of the sixth inning. Coleman came in with the tying run on deck and kept Ouachita scoreless to earn the save.

The Blossoms are back in action on Tuesday at home in a Great American Conference rivalry double-header against Southern Arkansas. First pitch is 2 p.m. at Blossoms Field.
