BARTLESVILLE, Oklahoma — Arkansas Tech's Aujuana Dawkins made a layup as time expired to beat the University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team by a final score of 60-58 on Friday in the opening round of the single-elimination Great American Conference Championship Tournament.
The Blossoms (13-14), the No. 8-seeded team in the tournament, took its first lead since the start of the third period on a layup by freshman Ayesha Wahid with 2:10 remaining in regulation.
More than a minute later, following turnovers and missed shots by both teams, Tech's Kelsey McClure put the Golden Suns back on top with a layup at the 1:03 mark. That gave Tech a 58-57 lead.
After nearly another minute ticked off the clock with more turnovers and missed shots, UAM senior Jordan Goforth was fouled going to the basket with four seconds remaining. Goforth made her first free throw, but missed the second to force a 58-all tie, setting the stage for Tech's last-second game winner.
Tech (24-3) built its largest lead of seven points early in the fourth period after outscoring UAM 15-9 in the third period. The Blossoms outscored Tech 22-17 in the second period to hold a one-point lead of 33-32 at the break.
UAM finished the game shooting 35 percent from the field (19-for-55), 25 percent on three-pointers (5-for-20) and 68 percent on foul shots (15-for-22). Goforth finished with a double-double of 11 points and 20 rebounds, the first 20-rebound performance for UAM since March of 2009, when Monica Perkins-Miller pulled down 21 in the Gulf South Conference Tournament.
Wahid led the Blossoms with 12 points. Senior Nikki Mullen and freshman Mia Hayes each had nine. Junior Tori Nichols had eight. Sophomore Taylor Collins had seven.
Tech ended at 38 percent overall (26-for-69), 15 percent on trey (3-for-20) and 46 percent on foul shots (5-for-11). Tech's Kelsey McClure led all scorers with 13 points.
Goforth ends her UAM career ranked fifth all-time in school history and first in Great American Conference history with a total of 1,803 points.
