MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team moved to 6-0 this season at Blossoms Field by beating Northwestern Oklahoma State twice on Saturday.
The Blossoms (12-6, 8-2 GAC) opened the series winning 4-3 before downing the Rangers (2-16, 1-9 GAC) 12-1 in five innings in the second half of the twin bill.
The majority of the scoring in the first game came in the late innings following junior McKenzie Rice's leadoff homerun in the bottom of the first.
Junior starting pitcher Kendra Coleman (5-4) had a no-hitter going through five innings before surrendering all of NWOSU's runs in the sixth on one swing, a three-run homerun by NWOSU's Jordan Haya to force a 3-all tie.
UAM had gone up 3-0 in the fourth on back-to-back run-producing hits from freshman Kali Bolter and Coleman. Bolter's RBI came on a double to right center. Coleman then drove in Bolter on a single to center.
Following the game-tying homerun by NWOSU in the top of the sixth, UAM senior Kali Piha put the Blossoms back on top in the bottom of the inning with a two-out solo homerun to left center, which ended up finalizing the scoring. Coleman retired the NWOSU side in order, including two strikeouts to seal the win.
In the second game, the majority of UAM's scoring came on grand slam homeruns from Piha and senior Holly Wilmarth. Piha capped a five-run second inning with a grand slam to left center. Wilmarth drove in a run in the previous at bat on a bases-loaded walk.
After NWOSU walked the bases loaded in the fifth, including bases-loaded walks with Rice and freshman Jordan Williams at the plate, it was Wilmarth's turn to go deep, driving a ball over the right field fence for a game-ending grand slam.
The Blossoms had 11 hits in the win, led by a 3-for-3 performance from sophomore Ashton Currey. Wilmarth, Piha and junior Korie Parker all had two hits in the win.
Senior Elizabeth Delafield (4-2) earned the complete-game win, giving up just one run off six hits with two strikeouts and one walk in five innings.
The four-game GAC series wraps up on Sunday with a double-header starting at 11 a.m.
