@WEEVILSBASEBALL TAKES GAME ONE FROM SOUTHEASTERN

DURANT, Oklahoma — The 25th-ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team opened a three-game Great American Conference road series on Friday afternoon with a 7-3 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Both teams scored two runs in the first inning. UAM's came on back-to-back run-producing bats from senior Travis Steinke and senior Nick Cerda. Steinke's was a double to center. Cerda followed up with a single through the middle of the infield.

In the bottom of the first, Southeastern (24-19, 19-9 GAC) tied it up on a two-run home run from Brandon Grimsley.

UAM (28-11, 18-7 GAC) got back on top in the top of the third inning on a solo home run from senior Corey Wood, his 16th round-tripper of the season to cushion his single-season school record and tie the GAC record.

In the sixth, UAM went up 4-2 on an RBI bunt from senior Kevin Fitzpatrick to score junior Guy Halbert, who led off the inning with a single.

For the second straight game, the Weevils strung together five consecutive hits in a single inning, this time to score three runs in the top of the eighth. That rally featured a two-run double from Wood and an RBI single from Steinke.

Southeastern's Logan Terwilliger finalized his team's scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

UAM posted its 19th game of the season with at least 10 hits, totaling 14 in Friday's win over Southeastern. Junior Nick Piraino went 3-for-4. Senior Evan Comeau went 2-for-5. Fitzpatrick went 2-for-4. Wood finished 2-for-4. Steinke was 2-for-4. Cerda was 2-for-5.

Senior Zach McKnight (7-1) earned the win after giving up three runs off seven hits with six strikeouts and three walks in 8.1 innings of work. Senior Ben Aldridge earned his third save of the year after coming in with the potential tying run on deck and retiring the final two Southeastern batters.

The series concludes on Saturday with a double-header starting at 1 p.m.
