MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team secured the No. 5 seed in next week's Great American Conference Championship Tournament by splitting with Southeastern Oklahoma State on Sunday at home, winning the first game 4-3 and losing the second game 6-3.
In the first game, the Blossoms (30-26, 24-20 GAC) used back-to-back solo home runs to left field from seniors Holly Wilmarth and Kali Piha in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a walk-off victory.
The Savage Storm (29-21, 25-15 GAC) held a 3-2 lead before those home runs after scoring one run in the first and two in the sixth inning.
UAM held a 2-1 lead in the third inning on a two-run single from sophomore Ashton Currey.
The Blossoms had eight total hits in the win. Wilmarth went 3-for-4. Piha went 2-for-4.
Junior Kendra Coleman (15-12) earned the win, giving up three runs off seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks in a complete-game effort. From the end of the first inning through the fifth inning, Coleman retired 13 consecutive Southeastern batters.
In the second game, the Savage Storm got out to a quick lead with two runs in each of the first and second innings.
Down 5-0, the Blossoms rallied late with three runs in the final two innings, all on home runs. Freshman Megan Moore hit her first career round-tripper in the sixth, a solo shot to left center. Wilmarth hit her third seventh-inning home run of the weekend, and 16th of the season, with a three-run shot to left field in the bottom of the seventh.
The GAC Championship Tournament is April 28-30 in Bentonville, Arkansas. The Blossoms open the double-elimination event against No. 4 seed Harding on Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Tiger Athletic Complex.
