@WEEVILSBASEBALL SWEPT BY HARDING

MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team suffered its first series loss of the 2016 season by losing a pair of games to Harding on Saturday at home by final scores of 5-3 in 11 innings and 8-7.

The Weevils (22-11, 14-7 Great American Conference) were limited to just four hits in Saturday's first game. UAM opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth on a bases-loaded walk by senior Kevin Fitzpatrick.

Harding (18-20, 10-14 GAC) answered in the top of the sixth inning with one to force a tie. In the bottom of the eighth, the Weevils went up 3-1 on a two-run single from senior Nick Cerda, but the Bisons were able to scratch two across in the top of the ninth to force extra innings.

Neither team scored in the 10th inning before the Bisons finalized the score with two runs off a pair of doubles in the top of the 11th.

In the second game, both teams scored in bunches early. The Bisons took advantage of two errors to score three in the top of the first. UAM answered with two in the bottom half of the frame, featuring an RBI triple from sophomore Brian Ray and a sac fly from senior Travis Steinke.

The Weevils busted loose for four runs in the bottom of the second on a two-run double from senior Evan Comeau and a two-run single from Steinke. That put UAM up 6-3.

The Bisons cut it to a three-run game with one run in the top of the fourth, before an RBI single from UAM junior Alex Smith in the fifth put the Weevils up 7-4. That ended up being the final scoring play for the Weevils.

Harding got back on top for the final time with four runs in the top of the sixth inning, highlighted by a three-run, pinch-hit home run by Davis Richardson.

UAM continues its current seven-game home stand on Tuesday in a single non-conference game against Ouachita. First pitch is 3 p.m. at Weevils Field.
