@WEEVILSBASEBALL DROPS SERIES FINALE TO MULERIDERS

MONTICELLO — The 20th-ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team lost its regular season finale on Monday with a 4-3, 10-inning setback to Southern Arkansas at Weevils Field.

With the loss, UAM (31-14, 21-9 GAC) has the No. 2 seed and will host No. 7 seed Harding (24-26, 15-18 GAC) in the opening round of the Great American Conference Championship Tournament this weekend at Weevils Field. The best-of-three series has been scheduled for games on Friday, May 6 at 3 p.m. and Saturday at noon. If necessary, the third game of the series will be played on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Harding swept the Weevils in a three-game GAC set played at Weevils Field April 8-9. Final scores were 7-4, 5-3 in 11 innings and 8-7.

In Monday's loss to SAU (30-18, 19-14 GAC), the Weevils were first to score with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The first came on a home run from senior catcher Travis Steinke down the left field. The second came on a single from junior Alex Smith to plate sophomore Brian Ray, who doubled earlier in the inning.

SAU answered with one in the fifth, and added two more in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead. All three runs came on RBI singles.

Down to its final out in the ninth, UAM rallied to force extra innings on an RBI double down the right field line from junior Nick Piraino to score Ray, who doubled in the same spot to lead off the inning.

The Muleriders responded in the top of the 10th with a solo home run from Billy Germaine to finalize the scoring. UAM was retired in order in the bottom of the inning.
