@WEEVILSBASEBALL SUFFERS FIRST POSTSEASON LOSS

ST. CLOUD, Minnesota — The 24th-ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team suffered its first loss of the 2016 postseason on Friday with a 7-6 setback to Minnesota State at the NCAA Central Region Tournament.

UAM moves to 6-1 in the postseason and 37-15 overall, and falls into the loser's bracket of the regional tournament. UAM, No. 4 seed in the regional and the GAC tournament champion, faces off against No. 7 seed and GAC regular season champion Southwestern Oklahoma State on Friday at 11 a.m. in an elimination game.

In Thursday's loss to the eighth-seeded Mavericks (36-16), the Weevils struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning off two hits, a walk and a MSU error.

The Mavericks responded with one run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly.

UAM took a 4-1 lead in the top of the third on three consecutive two-out hits, including an RBI double from senior catcher Travis Steinke and an RBI single from senior first baseman Mitchell Dornblut.

MSU answered five six runs over the next three innings, highlighted by a two-run home run from Dylan Dresel in the third. The Mavericks took a 6-4 lead with a three-run fourth inning, aided by a UAM throwing error. MSU scored its final run in the fifth, scoring on a double play after the leadoff batter walked to start the frame.

UAM chipped away at its deficit with one run in the sixth on an RBI single from Fitzpatrick, and pulled to within one run on a solo home run from sophomore center fielder Brian Ray in the seventh.

The Weevils outhit the Mavericks 10-9 in the contest. Fitzpatrick led UAM with a 3-for-5 outing. Steinke finished 2-for-5.

Sophomore Braden Chambers (11-1) suffered his first loss of the season after giving up six runs (three earned) off six hits with four strikeouts and three walks in the first three innings. Senior Ben Aldridge provided five innings of relief, giving up only one run off three hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
