Arkadelphia - Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team defeated Great American Conference opponent Ouachita Baptist Thursday night by a final score of 94-93 in overtime.
This victory was the 14
th straight for UAM this season, but Weevil basketball set the school record for overall consecutive wins at 15, dating back to last season.
The Weevils (14-0, 9-0 GAC) battled against the Tigers of Ouachita Baptist (8-6, 6-4 GAC) on the road as each team saw extensive minutes in this game with a lead, with the Weevils holding a 48-41 advantage over the Tigers at the half. Ouachita surged out to a double-digit lead midway through the second half of play, but UAM went on to catch fire and storm a comeback against OBU.
Arkansas-Monticello generated a 13-1 run late in the second half to reclaim the lead at 73-72 and this match-up would need overtime to be decided however. The overtime period saw each team trading buckets throughout but with seconds on the clock and UAM down two points, Cobe Goosby knocked down a three-pointer from the corner and lifted the Weevils to its 14
th straight victory this season.
Leading UAM on offense in the game was Karim Mawuenyega with 31 total points, a career-high for the junior. Karim hit six three-pointers in the match-up and totaled five assists, along with seven rebounds.
Several other Weevils finished the game in double-figures as Cobe Goosby totaled 20 points, along with Tyrin Jones at 15 and Vicktor Arnick added 11 total.
Final team stats on the night for UAM included 54 percent shooting from the field (32-for-59), 43 percent on three's (9-for-21), and 75 percent on free throws (21-for-28). The Tigers finished the game shooting 49 percent (37-for-75) from the field, 38 percent from beyond the arc (8-for-21), and 65 percent on foul shots (11-for-17).
Arkansas-Monticello will hit the court next this Saturday, January 21 as the Weevils will face Arkansas Tech inside Steelman Field House with tip-off set for 4 p.m.
