DURANT, Oklahoma — The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team swept the first day of its series against Great American Conference opponent Southeastern Oklahoma State on the road by final scores of 5-1, and 6-5.
In the first match-up of the day for Arkansas-Monticello (8-4, 2-0 GAC) against the SOSU Savage Storm (6-6, 0-2 GAC) the Blossoms were able to strike first in the opening inning after a Korie Parker sacrifice fly gave UAM the 1-0 advantage.
The Blossoms opened the scoring margin up in the top of the fifth inning, which began with an Ashton Currey two-run home-run to left field, and was followed up by UAM generating two additional runs through a bases loaded walk, and a fielder's choice.
Senior Kendra Coleman turned in an impressive outing as she took a perfect game into the bottom of the seventh inning but unfortunately allowed two hits, and one walk. Coleman improves to (6-0) on the year and recorded seven total strikeouts in this match-up.
The second game of the day saw UAM on the board first as well after a Maranda Clendenin RBI single to right field. Kali Bolter extended that lead in the second inning with a home-run, and Coleman did the same in the top of the third with a home-run to left field, giving UAM the 4-0 lead.
Arkansas-Monticello brought in two more runs in the top of the fifth inning after a Kaylee Freeman RBI single to left, and a Bolter double to left put the UAM lead at 6-1. Despite a four-run inning in the bottom of the sixth by Southeastern, the Blossoms were able to finish the game off and sweep the day.
Maylie Bain earned her second victory of the year (2-1) in this contest and Alyson Finnigan recorded her first save of the season after throwing 1.1 scoreless innings.
The Blossoms will return to the field tomorrow, Saturday, February 25 in a GAC doubleheader against the Savage Storm in Durant, Oklahoma to conclude the series with first pitch of game number one set for 1 p.m.
