BETHANY, Oklahoma - The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team was taken down Saturday afternoon on the road by Great American Conference foe Southern Nazarene by a final score of 81-68.
The Blossoms (11-15, 8-14 GAC) struggled to find an answer for the hot first half shooting of the Crimson Storm of SNU (13-13, 10-12 GAC) as UAM trailed by nine at halftime. A big third quarter by the home team left Arkansas-Monticello down by 17 total points heading into the fourth and final quarter and could not generate enough of a comeback against SNU, ultimately falling 81-68.
Leading UAM on the offensive side of the ball on the day was sophomore Ayesha Wahid with 20 total points on 8-for-15 shooting from the floor. Wahid was able to pull down two rebounds, and record one block and one steal in the match-up also.
Senior Nelsha Peterson posted 19 overall points in the contest, along with junior Brittnee Broadway who finished the game with 14. Peterson went on to lead UAM in overall rebounding with eight total boards, and Broadway led Arkansas-Monticello in total assists after dishing out seven.
Final team statistics for the Blossoms included shooting 42 percent (25-for-60) from the field, 47 percent (7-for-15) on three-pointers, and 100 percent (11-for-11) on free throws. SNU finished the game shooting 51 percent (27-for-53) overall, 53 percent beyond the arc (10-for-19), and 71 percent (17-for-24) from the free throw line.
Arkansas-Monticello will return to action next on Thursday, March 2, as number eight seed UAM will face number one overall seed Harding University in the GAC Championship Tournament in Bartlesville, Oklahoma with tip-off set for 5:45 p.m.
