MONTICELLO - The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team defeated Great American Conference adversary Henderson State Thursday evening at home by a final score of 78-72.
#17 Arkansas-Monticello (18-2, 14-2 GAC) held at slim lead over Henderson State (13-9, 8-8 GAC) at the half at 38-33, and continued its high level of play into the second half. UAM led in this contest for over 30:00 minutes and did not see a lead change in the second half as well. Despite the Reddies making several small runs to inch closer towards the Weevils lead, UAM denied the comeback bid by the visiting Reddies to take the game at 78-72 by the final buzzer.
Offensively the Weevils were led by junior Derylton Hill with 20 total points in the match-up on 6-for-9 shooting from the field. Hill tallied his tenth 20 plus point game on the year and also led UAM in overall rebounding with eight boards.
Vicktor Arnick and Cobe Goosby each produced 19 points a piece in the game as well, and Arnick knocked down four three-pointers which helped surge UAM past the Reddies in the second half to the victory. Karim Mawuenyega built a solid stat-line for himself also in this game with six points, eight assists, and four rebounds.
Final team stats on the night for UAM included 51 percent shooting from the field (28-for-55), 38 percent on three-pointers (5-for-13), and 71 percent on foul shots (17-for-24). HSU finished the game shooting 45 percent (28-for-62) from the field, 28 percent on three's (5-for-18), and 69 percent from the free throw line (11-for-16).
The Weevils will hit the court next on Saturday, February 11 as UAM heads to Searcy, Arkansas to face GAC opponent Harding with tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m.
