MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team swept the opening Great American Conference doubleheader against Southwestern Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon, by final scores of 11-1 and 7-2.
The opening contest for UAM (18-10, 11-5 GAC) featured an offensive outburst against the visiting Bulldogs of SWOSU (10-16, 4-12 GAC), in a game that went a total of just six innings.
Arkansas-Monticello jumped on the board first in the match-up, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first on two bases loaded walks, and a bases loaded hit by pitch.
The Blossoms extended its lead out to 7-1 in the second inning, after a RBI single from Kendra Coleman, and a three-run home-run from Maranda Clendenin gave UAM a greater advantage.
Home-runs by Kaylee Freeman and Meagan Duchesne later in the ballgame powered UAM out to the 11-1 lead, and was enough to end the game in six innings as well.
Kendra Coleman (11-3) threw a complete game of 6.0 innings in the match-up, allowing just three hits, one run, and struck out seven total.
Game number two saw Arkansas-Monticello continue its high offensive output, scoring in the bottom of the first once again with a Clendenin sacrifice fly to left field. McKenzie Rice added to that lead in the following inning with a double to right center also.
UAM cushioned the lead further in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home-run from Korie Parker, and a two-run double down the right field line by Duchesne to put the Blossom lead at 7-0.
Kaylee Freeman (3-4) threw a complete game as well going the full 7.0 innings giving up five hits, two runs and recorded six strikeouts on the day.
The Blossoms return to the field tomorrow, March 26, as UAM will concluded its series with Southwestern Oklahoma State with a doubleheader at Blossoms Field with game one scheduled for 12 p.m.
