MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team swept the overall series against Great American Conference foe Henderson State Saturday afternoon with two wins over HSU at 3-0, and 4-0.
Game number one for Arkansas-Monticello (24-10, 17-5 GAC) versus HSU (16-20, 10-14 GAC) saw the Blossoms on the board first in the opening inning after taking advantage of a Henderson State error which scored one run, and an Ashton Currey single to left brought in the second to give UAM the 2-0 lead early in the match-up.
The Blossom offense generated one additional run in the contest in the bottom of the third inning, as Meagan Duchesne drove in the third run for UAM.
Kendra Coleman (14-3) was dominate throughout the game as she tied her season high in strikeouts with 11 overall, and only surrendered one hit and one walk in the shutout victory.
The second match-up during the afternoon once again featured Arkansas-Monticello scoring first in the bottom half of the third inning on a McKenzie Rice solo home-run to right center field.
Duchesne recorded another RBI on the day after drawing a bases loaded walk to put the home lead out to 2-0 in the third.
Junior Brittany Gentry sealed the game off in the sixth inning with a two-run double to left center to give UAM the 4-0 advantage for the series sweep of Henderson State.
Kaylee Freeman (6-4) earned her fifth straight win, pitching a five hit complete game shutout and recording one strikeout as well.
UAM returns to action next on Tuesday, April 4, as the Blossoms will travel to Magnolia, Arkansas to face #8 Southern Arkansas in a GAC doubleheader with game one slated for 1 p.m.
