MAGNOLIA, Ark. — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team was downed twice on the road by GAC opponent and nationally ranked Southern Arkansas.
The opening game for UAM (26-19, 21-11 GAC) versus the Muleriders of SAU (36-11, 28-4 GAC) saw the Weevils on the board in the top of the first inning after a Guy Halbert single down the left field line.
Southern Arkansas went on to score six unanswered runs to claim a 6-2 lead heading into the top of the fifth. UAM would not be done however, as the Weevils went on to score seven total runs in the top of the fifth to take a 9-6 lead.
The Weevils were able to retake the lead in the top of the eighth once again on a Marshall McPherson sacrifice fly to center field to give UAM the 12-11 advantage. SAU unfortunately was able to tie up the game in the eighth, and send the game into extra innings where the Muleriders ultimately won with a walk-off home run, 13-12.
Grant Black started on the mound for UAM throwing 4.0 inning and allowing earned five earned runs in the game. Landon McFadden, Nicholas Duthu, Michael Harrison, and Dawson Moser each made relief appearances as well in the ball game.
Game number two for UAM was a different story as the Muleriders jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the first two innings, and continued to extend its lead throughout.
UAM tacked on two runs in the third and fourth inning to only trail 6-2 after fourth innings, but Southern Arkansas went on to score eight more runs to take the game 14-2.
Kris Brown started on the hill for the Weevils, and Jared Libke, Ty Jones, and Shane Fontenot all saw action in the game as well.
Arkansas-Monticello returns to action tomorrow against the Muleriders in Magnolia, Arkansas in the final game of the series with first pitch set for 12:30 p.m.
