MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team defeated Ouachita Baptist in game one of the Great American Conference series against the Tigers, by a final score of 7-6.
The Weevils (21-12, 16-6 GAC) played from behind in most of this contest against OBU (11-25, 8-14 GAC) as the Tigers jumped onto the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning with a three run advantage.
UAM slowly chipped away at the Ouachita lead throughout this match-up, beginning with a Nick Piraino RBI single to left field in the second inning. Arkansas-Monticello added two additional runs in the fourth as well on mistakes by the Tigers to the Weevils advantage.
The visiting Tigers recorded two more runs in the top of the sixth to push its lead out to 6-3 over UAM, but the Weevils quickly answered back in the bottom half of the inning with another RBI single by Piraino, and the senior was able to make his way across the plate later in the inning after a Ouachita error.
Arkansas-Monticello tied up the ballgame in the bottom of the seventh with a Gentry Ford sacrifice fly to center field, and a Brian Ray sac fly to center in the eighth inning gave the Weevils the one run lead it needed to seal away the victory over Ouachita.
Grant Black started on the mound for UAM, throwing 6.0 total innings, allowing four earned runs, seven hits, and struck out five total.
Landon McFadden (W, 3-1) went on to be credited with the win in this match-up as he pitched the eighth inning, only allowing one hit and tallied one strikeout. Dawson Moser (S, 4) picked up another save on the year throwing the final inning and shutting down the Ouachita opposition.
