@WEEVILSBASEBALL POWERS PAST ARKANSAS TECH IN GAC TOURNAMENT

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team defeated number two seeded Arkansas Tech in the first game of the GAC Championship Tournament Final Four round, by a score of 7-3.

The match-up, which had been shifted over to the campus of Ouachita Baptist University due to incoming inclement weather in the afternoon, saw the Weevils (30-19) on the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning against the Wonder Boys of ATU (34-20), with a Brady Weiss sacrifice fly to left field.

UAM extended its lead in the top of the third as Andres Rios singled up the middle to knock in Weiss, for the 2-0 advantage.

The Wonder Boys however recorded three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead and would hold on to that edge heading into the top of the ninth.

Rios connected with a ball with the bases loaded to second base in the ninth and Weiss advanced to second, and collided with the opposing infielder and ultimately made it safe to the bag, which saw the run from third score and tie up the ballgame at 3-3.

Guy Halbert then sent the very first pitch of the next at-bat that he saw, and drove it well over the left center field wall for a grand slam, and gave Arkansas-Monticello the 7-3 lead, and ultimately was enough to earn the victory.

Grant Black started the game on the mound as he threw 7.0 total innings, only allowing three earned runs, and struck out two. Landon McFadden came in on relief in the bottom of the eighth inning to face three total batters as well.

Dawson Moser (W, 5-1) earned the win in the contest as he pitched 1.2 total innings, totaled three strikeouts, and shut down the ATU offense late in the game.

Arkansas-Monticello will be back in action tomorrow, Friday, May 12, as the Weevils face number four seed Henderson State in the second match-up of the GAC Championship Tournament Final Four round at Clyde Berry Field on HSU's campus with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
