MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello football won a big game on homecoming at Cotton Boll Stadium in Monticello, Arkansas on Saturday. The Weevils rushed for 363 total yards and came from behind in the second half to snag a victory over Southern Nazarene.
The Weevils were led on the ground by
Demilon Brown in total yards with 146, highlighted by a 74-yard touchdown run in the second half.
However, it was
Devontae Dean who had three touchdowns and 107 yards on the ground providing most of the scoring.
On defense, UAM tallied two interceptions.
Jonathan Scott snagged one for 24 yards, and the defensive lineman
Easton Seidl picked one off following a deflection.
In the first quarter, SNU capitalized on a fumble. After UAM's first drive went backwards, the Weevils then fumbled the snap on the punt, putting the Crimson Storm in great field position at the UAM eight. SNU would then score the first touchdown of the game and hit the extra point to get ahead, 7-0.
Early in the second quarter, UAM would answer back. Following a three-and-out for the Weevils, SNU's Reid Roeloffs muffed a punt and UAM recovered starting a drive in SNU territory. Brown then completed a 37-yard pass to
DeAndre Washington setting up Dean to plunge it in for the two-yard touchdown. The PAT was good and the game was tied, 7-7.
The Crimson Storm answered right back however. On the next play,
Angel Quiroga's kick was returned for a 97-yard touchdown. SNU would hit the extra point to go ahead, 14-7.
SNU later would kick a pair of field goals and take a 20-7 lead into halftime.
The second half turned out to be a different story as UAM came out firing on both sides.
SNU's first drive of the half turned out to be nothing and UAM bounced back with a score of its own. Following a 5-play 44-yard drive, it was Dean again who punched it in for the score.
Josh Marini then hit the extra point as UAM cut into the deficit, 20-14.
UAM forced SNU to punt again on its following drive and came back with a 10-play 80-yard drive that ended in a Dean rushing touchdown. The Weevils took the lead, 21-20, and held it through the end of the third quarter.
Brown would put the Weevils ahead 28-20 on his 74-yard rushing TD after UAM forced SNU to punt once again with 12:48 left to go in the contest.
UAM made it 24-unaswered points later in the quarter when Marini hit a 35-yard field goal following an 8-play 36-yard drive.
SNU would eventually score a touchdown and hit the 2-point conversion to make it 31-28 with 3:00 minutes left. However, the Crimson Storm elected to kick it away instead of attempting an onside kick.
The Weevils then sealed the deal giving the ball to Dean and
Chris Hargraves for a pair of first downs. UAM would win the contest, 31-28.
As a token of appreciation, the game ball was presented to Chancellor Dr. Karla Hughes following the contest.
UAM is now 5-2 overall and in Great American Conference play, which is its best seven-game record since 2008.
