UAM primed for non-conference matchup against Central Baptist

The UAM men’s basketball team will host Central Baptist on Tuesday at Steelman Field House in Monticello, Arkansas at 7 p.m. taking a break from conference games.

SCOUTING THE WEEVILS
The UAM men's basketball team will play Central Baptist College today at the Steelman Field House in Monticello, Arkansas. The Weevils come into this matchup with a 4-1 overall record and a 2-0 conference mark. The Mustangs come to UAM with a 5-2 overall record and a 2-0 American Midwest Conference mark.
 
UAM returns to action today following a big 2-0 week in conference games. The Weevils first beat Harding at home last Thursday, 104-80, and then won on the road at Ouachita Baptist 76-73.
 
The Weevils are still playing at a high level in quite a few categories. One of their main strengths is holding onto the ball. UAM is 10th in NCAA Division II in turnovers per game at just 10.0. UAM is also 22nd in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.52, 30th in field goal percentage shooting 50.5 percent from the floor, 31st in turnover margin at +4.8 and 35th in steals per game at 9.2.
 
UAM has four players averaging at least 10.0 points per game in KJ Lesure, Marcus Gilbert, Justin Slocum and Austin Hardy. Lesure is scoring 20.2 points per contest, which is fifth in the GAC, while Gilbert adds 16.6 ppg, Slocum posts 10.8 ppg and Hardy tallies 10.4 ppg.
 
Lesure is also coming off a huge week. He was awarded GAC Co-Player of the Week after helping UAM to its 2-0 conference record averaging 25.5 ppg in the two contests and adding 14 assists and three steals.
 
The Indianapolis native has also been outstanding in other categories in the GAC rankings. He is second in the conference in field goal percentage at 59.3, fourth in assists per game at 5.4 and fifth in points per game averaging 20.2. His perfect week at the free throw line as also placed him fourth in the conference in that category as he is 18-20 shooting 90.0 percent.
 
Overall, UAM is shooting 50.5 percent from the floor and 38.0 percent from three-point land. The Weevils are also averaging 38.7 total rebounds per contest and 16.0 assists per game.
 
Defensively, UAM has forced opponents to turn the ball over 74 times, have forced 46 steals and 16 blocks.
 
Denzel McDuffey and Gilbert have been the team's top rebounders averaging 6.2 per contest and 6.0 per contest, respectively.
 
Lesure leads the roster in total steals at 11, while Denzel McDuffey has sent five total shots back with blocks this year.

SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
Central Baptist is a member of the NAIA but have been one of the better teams for some time. The Mustangs are averaging 88.57 points per contest this year and 43.7 rebounds per game.
 
They have five players averaging double-figures in Darius Williams (15.9 ppg), Tyrone Alston (13.3 ppg), Simon Okolue (12.6 ppg), Darius Polley (11.9 ppg) and Jalen Adams (10.6 ppg).
 
Okolue and Alston are the team's top players on the glass averaging 6.9 boards per game and 6.6 rebounds per game, respectively.
