CLEVELAND, Miss. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team dropped a non-conference game at Delta State University on Tuesday from Cleveland, Mississippi, 79-59. The Blossoms were held to shoot 35.1 percent from the field and 31.3 percent from three-point range.
Mackenzie Tillman and
Kayla Bradley were the team's leading scorers finishing with 19 and 11 points, respectively.
Berniezha Tidwell led the team in rebounds with six, while also recording four assists and eight points on offense.
UAM tallied the first few points of the game, but it was not long before the Lady Statesmen took over to outscore the Blossoms, 14-4 with 2:36 left to go in in the first quarter.
Tillman would hit a jumper a little later to cut the deficit to nine points and eventually to seven points, but DSU went on a run to conclude the quarter and take a 19-10 lead.
In the second, UAM fought to keep the game within striking distance. With the lead at double-digits and 3:28 left to play in the half, Tillman hit a jumper off an assist from Tidwell to cut the lead to nine. A little later,
Pamela Bethel helped shrink the lead to seven with a layup off an assist from
Kayla Bradley. To end the half, UAM was down by eight, 35-27.
Early in the third, UAM cut the lead to six off a three from
Jaida Muhammad, but it was soon after that Delta State would take over. With a little over five minutes remaining in the third, the Lady Statesmen made it a 10-point advantage.
To finish the third, UAM did bring the lead down to 11 after Bethel hit another key layup, but DSU took a 59-38 advantage into the fourth quarter.
In the last quarter of play, UAM aimed to keep pushing back, but Delta State outscored UAM 20-11 and the Blossoms fell, 79-59.
With the loss, UAM is now 8-2 on the year and 2-2 on the road. The Blossoms will take an undefeated 6-0 home record in to 2020.
