UAM falls in conference contest at Arkansas Tech, 75-70

The UAM men’s basketball team lost a conference contest on the road at Arkansas Tech on Saturday, 75-70. The Weevils were led by Justin Slocum who managed a double-double with 31 points and 14 rebounds.

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team lost a conference contest on the road at Arkansas Tech University on Saturday, 75-70. The Weevils were led by Justin Slocum who managed a double-double with 31 points and 14 rebounds.
 
It was a tightly contested game throughout as the largest lead for either team was just six points.
 
Slocum got the Weevils going early with a basket in the paint. He was outstanding all game and keeping up the thrilling play throughout the first period. He helped UAM take a six-point lead with 16:23 remaining in the period when he got free for a nice layup. Later, he drilled a jumper to make it 11-9 in favor of UAM.
 
After a lot of back-and-forth play, The Weevils were up 36-34 in the first half with one minute and 15 seconds remaining in the period after Austin Hardy got a fastbreak bucket after a steal from Keyon Craddock. Hardy would later get to the free-throw line and hit two to make it a four-point UAM lead. The Wonder Boys got to the free-throw line themselves at the conclusion of the period and scored both. UAM took a 38-36 lead into the break.
 
The Weevils were up two with 12:39 remaining in the contest after another Slocum bucket. ATU tied the contest up 53-53 on a jumper and then took the lead after another jumper with a little over 11 minutes remaining.
 
UAM and ATU would be tied a little later at 61-61 following a Slocum layup. With 2:21 remaining, and the scored knotted up again 66-66, ATU took a three-point lead following an R.J. Glasper triple. Slocum responded with a solid layup to cut it to one, but Glasper hit a jumper shortly after to make it 71-68.
 
Wanya King later made it a one-point game following a layup. After a Tech timeout and a missed three, KJ Lesure put up a three-point shot, but it was no-good. The Weevils would have to foul in the final minutes but would be unable to score. Arkansas Tech went on to win the contest, 75-70.
 
Slocum finished 15-of-23 from the floor to tally 31 points, while also grabbing 14 rebounds.
 
King and Denzel McDuffey also were in double-figures with 11 points apiece. King also added seven rebounds while McDuffey registered four.
 
Lesure ended his day with five points, five assists and five boards.
 
As a team, UAM shot 41.7 percent from the floor and shot 13.6 percent from downtown. The Weevils had a tough day at the line shooting 43.8 percent.
 
With the loss, UAM falls to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in GAC play, while ATU is now 5-2 and 2-1 in league games.

UAM will play Henderson State University next Saturday from the Steelman Field House in Monticello. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
