UAM dominates at home on Parents/Family Appreciation Day

The UAM Football team dominated the field Saturday against GAC opponent Southwestern Oklahoma State, 44-9. The Boll Weevils were outstanding defensively, holding the Bulldogs to just 88 yards passing. UAM also rushed for 348 yards; it’s highest total for the season.

MONTICELLO, Ark. ­– The University of Arkansas at Monticello Football team dominated the field Saturday against Great American Conference opponent Southwestern Oklahoma State University, 44-9. The Boll Weevils were outstanding defensively, holding the Bulldogs to just 88 yards passing. UAM also rushed for 348 yards; it's highest total this season.
 
The secondary was a big story, recording three interceptions of the high-powered Southwestern offense. Coming into the day, the Bulldogs were second in the conference in passing offense.
 
Christian Jefferson registered two interceptions for 22 yards, while Tyronne Brumfield had a 34-yard pick-6.
 
On offense, UAM's Devontae Dean led the charge with 121 yards rushing, while Alex Day posted 92 yards. Demilon Brown had six carries for 49 yards and a touchdown, while Logan Penn registered four carries for 19 yards and a TD. Stephen King also powered in a rushing touchdown of his own.
 
UAM averaged 6.4 yards per carry on the day and had three rushes for at least 20 yards.
 
The first quarter was fairly quiet for both teams. Oklahoma State did give the Bulldogs an early 3-0 lead, but UAM scored 17 unanswered in the second quarter.
 
Just four seconds into the second, the Boll Weevils scored at the end of a 10 play 75-yard drive, when the big man, King punched a 3-yard run into the endzone.
 
With 6:18 remaining in the half, UAM Josh Marini kicked a 27-yard field goal to put the Weevils up, 10-3.
 
UAM took some more momentum into the half when Caleb Canady hooked up with DeAndre Washington for a 4-yard touchdown pass to conclude an 11 play 82-yard drive. The Boll Weevils took a 17-3 lead into halftime.
 
SWOSU did answer late in the third with a touchdown. The Bulldogs missed the extra point, but UAM still led at the end of the quarter, 17-9.
 
In the fourth, UAM blew the game wide open. At 13:49, Canady threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Parham to finish off an eight play, 67-yard drive.
 
On the following series for SWOSU, Myron Norfleet threw a pass on the second play of the drive that was picked off by Jefferson to give UAM great field position. It was Jefferson's second pick of the contest.
 
After five plays, Penn punched-in a 2-yard rush for the touchdown, and Marini's extra point was good giving the Weevils a 31-9 lead.
 
Following the kickoff, on the first play of the Bulldogs' next drive, Tyler Marr threw one into the hands of Brumfield, and he raced it all the way back for a 34-yard pick-6. After the extra point, it was a 38-9 UAM lead.
 
To conclude scoring, Brown plunged in his first career touchdown rush to finish a 5 play 64-yard drive taking us to the final score of, 44-9.
 
With the win, UAM improves to 2-1 overall and 2-1 in GAC play.

The Boll Weevils will travel to Alva, Oklahoma for a GAC contest at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
