HOUSTON – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team suffered its second loss of the 2020 season at Houston Astros Winter Invitational after Flagler College rallied for three runs in ninth inning to earn the win, 6-3. The Weevils played pretty solid defense, but mustered just three hits in the loss.
In the first inning, Flagler went ahead in the top of the first, but the Weevils answered. After
Cade Thompson led off the inning with a hit,
Andrew Piraino registered UAM's first RBI of the 2020 season with a ground-rule double over the right field wall to score Thompson, tying the game, 1-1.
The game remained tied all the way into the seventh thanks to some solid defensive plays by the Weevils keeping the Saints baserunners stranded.
In the top of the seventh, Flagler went ahead 3-1, but in the bottom of the inning the Weevils manufactured a pair of runs.
Hudson Hopkins led off the frame with a single and
Dylan Borman hit a double off the top of the left field wall to put runners on second and third. With two outs in the inning,
Cole Muckleroy hit a line drive up the middle that was misplayed by the Flagler shortstop allowing Hopkins and Borman to score, tying the game again, 3-3.
The difference in the game was the ninth inning after the Saints rallied for three runs on four hits to take a 6-3 advantage. The Weevils put the leadoff man on in the bottom of the inning, but went down in order after, dropping the contest, 6-3.
Connor Wilkerson started the game for UAM and got the no-decision hurling 4.0 innings allowing just one earned run on five hits and three walks, while punching out one.
Erik Key (L, 0-1) took the loss surrendering three earned runs on one walk and four hits while punching out two.
Flagler Freshman Blake Hooker (W, 1-0) got the win in his first career appearance hurling two shutout innings striking out five batters and allowing one walk.
With the loss, the Weevils drop to 0-2 on the season while Flagler improves to 2-0 after wins against ranked opponents in No. 4 Central Missouri and UAM.

The Weevils will finish off their trip to Houston on Sunday with a 5 p.m. contest against No. 18 Millersville University.
