WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team dropped a Great American Conference contest at Southwestern Oklahoma State University after a last-second basket scored to put the Bulldogs ahead late for the victory. The Weevils had four players in double-figures in the loss.
The Weevils played solid in the first half taking an early double-digit lead. With a little under 12 minutes to play,
Wanya King hit a triple to put the Weevils up by seven. A little later, UAM made it a 10-point lead after
Denzel McDuffey pulled up for a jumper.
Under eight minutes left to play in the period,
Marcus Gilbert made it a 35-22 advantage in favor of UAM. SWOSU cut it to single-digits prior to the half and Gilbert kept the lead at nine into the break, 49-39.
To start the second half, SWOSU went on a run to take the lead, 63-60.
Austin Hardy tied the game up, 63-63, with a deep three.
The Weevils and Bulldogs traded leads toward the end of the game and in the final minute the game was decided. Gilbert hit a big three with 37 seconds left to put UAM up by one. SWOSU then took the lead after a foul and a pair of free throws. With 10 seconds left UAM pushed the ball up the floor and Gilbert hit a jumper in the paint to put the Weevils ahead one.
After a SWOSU timeout, the Bulldogs Kamden Gipson hit a jumper with five seconds left to go ahead. UAM then turned the ball over on its final possession and lost, 85-84.
Gilbert tallied a double-double and led all UAM scorers with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
KJ Lesure finished with 17 points, five rebounds and seven assists.
Justin Slocum and King also finished in double-figures with Slocum tallying 14 points and King adding 10.
With the loss, the Weevils drop to 14-9 overall and 6-8 in GAC games, while SWOSU improves to 10-10 overall and 6-8 in league contests.
