UAM looking for third straight, matches up with Arkansas Tech on Saturday

The UAM men’s basketball team will get set for a GAC contest against Arkansas Tech on Saturday from the Steelman Field House at 4 p.m. The Weevils are seeking their third straight conference win.

SCOUTING THE WEEVILS
As the regular season winds down, the Weevils are currently sixth in the standings with a 9-8 conference record while the Wonder Boys are tied for seventh at 8-9.
 
The last time these two teams met was on December 7th, 2019 in Russellville, Arkansas. It was the Weevils first conference loss of the season dropping the contest, 75-70.
 
Last time out, UAM won a big-time game on a last-chance effort against Southern Arkansas on Thursday, 67-64. As for Tech, the Wonder Boys fell on the road at Harding University, 99-95.
 
The Weevils are now riding a three-game winning streak and have won four of their last five after previously going on a six-game skid.
 
UAM still ranks as one of the better teams in the country in a few categories. The Weevils are currently 29th in NCAA Division II in scoring offense averaging 84.4 points per game while shooting 47.2 percent from the field. They distribute the ball exceptionally well also ranking 34th in DII in total assists with 378.
 
On the glass, the Weevils are dangerous, ranking fourth in the country in total rebounds, 1,044 and 24th in rebounds per game at 40.2.
 
They also have some of the most active hands in the country ranking 17th in steals (217) and 39th in steals per game (8.3).
 
UAM is led by the hero of last game, KJ Lesure. He averages a team-high 18.7 points per game, 6.0 assists per game and 1.8 steals per contest on defense.
 
Closely behind in scoring are Marcus Gilbert and Justin Slocum, who both average 13.7 points per game. Gilbert is also second in the country behind Lesure in total minutes played at 986:46 and 11th in minutes per game (37.5). Slocum is second on the team in rebounds at 6.8 per contest while also blocking 23 shots on defense.
 
UAM's other player averaging double-figures is Austin Hardy who is scoring 11.8 points per game shooting 47.9 percent from the field and 40.2 percent from deep.
 
The Weevils top defender and rebounder has been Denzel McDuffey who snags 8.2 boards per game while ranking 48th in the country in steals per game at 2.0 while swatting a team-high 30 blocks.

SCOUTING THE WONDER BOYS
Arkansas Tech has been an efficient scoring team this year, but struggles to hold teams from scoring on defense. The Wonder Boys are scoring 80.1 points per game while surrendering 82.2 points per game for a -2.1-scoring margin.
 
They are shooting 43.1 percent from the field and 33.5 percent from downtown while also shooting 67.7 percent at the free-throw line.
 
R.J. Glasper has been the team's top scorer this season averaging 18.3 points per game while also averaging 6.1 assists per contest.
 
Devante Foster is second to Glasper in scoring averaging 12.4 points per game. He does lead the team in rebounds however snagging 7.6 boards per contest.

UAM will return to action on Thursday when it hosts East Central University from the Steelman Field House in Monticello, Arkansas. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. following the women's game.
