ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team earned a game one victory over Ouachita Baptist University on Friday from Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Most of the game was a pitcher's duel until the Weevils tacked on runs in the late innings, including six in the top of the ninth to earn the victory, 8-1.
UAM got some solid pitching out of
Matt Lundh and
Ojani Chacon to limit the Tigers to one run, while also getting some big offensive games from
Hudson Hopkins and
Aaron Gaela.
To start the game, OBU actually jumped out in front on a leadoff home run from Tyler Riebock gave them a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first.
The following frame, the Weevils knotted the score when OBU walked in
Audy Clary with the bases loaded.
Pitching kept both teams at bay all the way until the top of the seventh inning. With two outs in the top frame, Hopkins cracked a solo homer over the wall to make it 2-1 Weevils.
The Weevils later put to bed any chance of OBU making a comeback when they exploded for six runs in the top of the ninth, thanks to some solid at-bats to drive in runs. In the inning, Hopkins and Gaela both doubled to drive in three runs and UAM manufactured a few more on an error and hitting behind runners.
Chacon then slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth, allowing UAM to win the game, 8-1.
