MONTICELLO, Ark. - The 21st ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team split its doubleheader matchup with No. 13 Augustana University (S.D.) on Saturday from Weevils Field in Monticello, Arkansas. The Weevils earned a win in game one following a walk-off RBI double from
Hudson Hopkins. In game two, UAM tallied a run in the bottom of the sixth, but were unable to comeback.
In the first matchup, UAM and AUG were locked in a pitcher's duel until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Weevils tallied four runs. The Vikings later tied the game in the late innings, but UAM won it in the bottom of the ninth, 5-4.
For game two, Augustana got ahead early and never looked back. The Weevils did register a run on a
Jordan Johnson home run, but still dropped the contest, 4-1.
The game one victory was UAM's first of the season. With the split, its record is now 1-4 on the season, while Augustana is now 1-1.
GAME ONE - #13 AUG 4, #21 UAM 5
Both teams were locked in a pitcher's duel early on getting great outings from
Matt Lundh on UAM's side, and Seth Miller on AUG's side. It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth that the Weevils broke through.
With the bases juiced in the fifth,
Audy Clary singled to score
Dylan Borman opening scoring. Hopkins was then hit by a pitch, and Johnson was walked to follow allowing two more runs to score. The fourth run of the frame later came across via balk putting UAM up, 4-0.
In the top of the seventh, Augustana began its comeback tallying a pair of runs. The following inning, they registered two more to tie the contest, 4-4.
The Weevils were held scoreless in the bottom of the eighth and would need a walk-off to win it after holding the Vikings scoreless in the top of the ninth. With two outs in the inning, Clary walked. Hopkins worked a 3-2 count and stroked a ball into the left-centerfield gap. Clary hustled around from first helping the Weevils earn a walk-off win.
Lundh tallied the no-decision for UAM going 6.0 innings allowing just two hits and one walk while punching out 10.
Thomas Bruss (L, 0-1) took the loss allowing one earned run on one hit in 0.1 innings pitched.
GAME TWO - #13 AUG 4, #21 UAM 1
The second matchup was a bit of a different story on both sides. The Vikings tallied runs early and UAM could muster just one on three hits.
AUG registered one run in the first, one in the second and a pair in the third to take an early 4-0 advantage.
The Weevils tallied a hit in the bottom of the first from Hopkins, but never pushed him across. Clary later got a hit in the bottom of the fifth, but UAM was held scoreless again.
It was not until the bottom of the sixth inning that the Weevils got a run. On a 2-1 count, Johnson hit his first homer of the 2020 season depositing the pitch over the right-centerfield wind screen.
The one run would be all the Weevils got however, as they fell, 4-1.
Connor Wilkerson (L, 0-1) took the loss for UAM going 2.1 innings allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk. He also struck out two batters.
Mason Philley did a solid job out of the bullpen for UAM pitching 4.2 innings of scoreless ball while punching out five.
Tanner Brown (W, 1-0) got the win for Augustana going 5.0 shutout innings allowing two hits and two walks while striking out five.
