Box Score MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello falls in the final moments on the road against rival Southern Arkansas after surrendering a tie-breaking bucket with 4.1 seconds remaining in the game. The Weevils lost an opportunity to tie the game back up after a team technical foul allowed SAU to push their lead up to 71-67.
The game began as a back and forth battle as the two teams traded buckets in the opening half. The contest saw five ties and eight lead changes in the first 20 minutes with the largest lead for UAM reaching just six points. Each team managed 16 points in the paint in the first half, but the Weevils used a slight edge of 9-5 on points off turnovers to take a 33-32 lead into the break.
UAM started the second half with a 9-0 run in the first three minutes to take a 42-32 lead. The Weevils were able to expand their lead up to 13 points, but turnovers and missed free throws allowed the Muleriders to climb back into the game. A combination of four turnovers and three missed layups in the final 4:22 of the game aided SAU to make a 14-2 run to close out the contest. UAM ultimately falling 71-67 to Southern Arkansas.
Three players finished in double digits for UAM with
Denzel McDuffey leading the way putting up 14 points to go with five rebounds and four assists. Joining McDuffey in double digits were
Miles Daniels with 13 and
Lemmie Howard with 12.
The Weevils shot 45.8 percent from beyond the arc, knocking down 11-of-24 three-pointers. Daniels and
Kendal Frey paced UAM from downtown each knocking down three from long range.
Dajuan Jones offset a slow scoring night by dishing out 11 assists in the game.
