MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team begins the season with a dominant 75-45 victory over the University of the Ozarks Sunday at Steelman Field House. The Weevils had nine players land in the scoring column with
Miles Daniels leading all scorers with 19.
UAM never trailed in the game after opening up the first half on a 6-0 run in the first minute of the contest. The Weevils took advantage of 10 Eagles turnovers and six offensive rebounds for 20 points in the first half. Daniels led the way for UAM's scoring barrage from three-point range, going 5-of-5 from downtown for 15 points in the opening 20 minutes.
The Weevils finished with a 22-9 run, highlighted by a three pointer from
Blakely Cobb with three seconds remaining on the clock to push the lead to 38-19 at the break.
The second half was more of the same story from UAM as the defense held the Ozarks to just 31 percent shooting from the field and 3-of-16 from beyond the arc. The Weevils cleaned up on the glass in the final 20 minutes pulling down 18 boards to ultimately outrebound the Eagles 31-25.
UAM capped a 10-0 run to put the Ozarks away on a fast break dunk by
Kyler Haynes to push the lead to 32 with 6:03 remaining.
The Weevils picked up their first win of the season by a final score of 75-45 to improve to 1-0 overall.
Daniels led all scorers with 19 points on the day, whileÂ
Max Warren and
Denzel McDuffey each tallied double-digits with 15 and 11.
The Weevils shot 41.4 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc for the game.
