Weevils Hold Off Tigers

A strong defensive performance puts UAM back in the win column defeating Ouachita Baptist 55-52 on the road Thursday.

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team clamped down defensively to win its fourth straight road victory taking down Ouachita Baptist 55-52 Thursday. The Weevils (12-4, 11-4 GAC) held the Tigers (4-10, 4-9 GAC) to their lowest scoring total of the season on just 36.2 percent shooting including only 3-of-17 from downtown.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair as the lead changed hands four times until Miles Daniels knocked down his first three-pointer of the contest to give UAM the lead it would not relinquish at 18-16. The triple from Daniels sparked a 13-6 run for the Weevils to take a 31-22 lead into the locker room.

On the defensive end in the opening 20 minutes, UAM held the Tigers to just 2-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc while forcing 10 turnovers.

Another bucket from downtown for Daniels with 15:51 to play gave the Weevils their largest lead of the contest at 37-24.

The Tigers did not go away easily battling back to cut the UAM lead to three with 8:36 remaining. The teams would trade buckets sparingly down the stretch until just over two minutes were on the clock. Max Warren tallied the final two points for the Weevils on a layup with 2:18 to play to go up 55-49. OBU would cut the lead back down to three, but UAM showed its toughness forcing the Tigers to take a difficult shot at the buzzer to try to tie the game. The Weevils managed to hold on for the 55-52 win.

Lemmie Howard led the charge posting his second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Max Warren also finished in double digits tallying 11.

Defensively, the Weevils registered seven steals and three blocks while forcing OBU into 13 turnovers.
