ALVA, Okla. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team wrapped up their first weekend of games this spring with a loss at Northwestern Oklahoma State Saturday. The Weevils were outscored 13-2 in this third and final game as they drop their opening series in conference play.
This weekend's series was originally slated to be played in Monticello, however had to be moved to the visiting site due to weather complications. Although the games were played on the road, UAM reported as the home team.
Sophomore
Mason Philley got his first start of the season, in a game in which
Connor Wilkerson,
Rigell Robinson, and
Trent Bunting also saw their first innings of the year.
The Rangers jumped out to an early two run lead to begin the game, but UAM countered with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the first.
Hudson Hopkins notched his first home run of the season with a solo shot in just the team's second at-bat of the game. The Weevils struck for another solo run later in the inning on an RBI-single off the bat of
Aaron Gaela.
UAM was unable to keep pace with the Rangers from there however, as Northwestern went on to plate the remainder of their runs unanswered.
Philley (L, 0-1) took the loss in his first start on the mound allowing four runs on three hits through two innings.
Thomason (W, 1-1) earned the win pitching eight innings while allowing two runs on four hits.
Redshirt Junior
Jordan Johnson concluded the weekend off to a hot start, going 6-for-2 (.500) with a home run and two doubles.
UP NEXT
The Weevils hit the road again this upcoming weekend to take on Henderson State in their second Great American Conference bout of the season. The series will begin Friday, March 5, with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
